Eco-Pretty Lighting: New LEDs Outshine CFLs by a Brightly Lit Mile
Enough! Enough, enough, enough with the gloominescence of compact fluorescents! We've just about had it with the eco-deceitful bandwagon to push the tubular spirals of fuglight. We do try to be more eco-friendly when we can, and we did our duty and tested CFLs in our home. But, OMG, to force your family or any hapless visitor to endure such hideous lighting is just not right.
So, we are ecstatic about the new LED lights that fit into standard lightbulb sockets -- now more readily available on the market! What's great about the new eco bulbs is that they're designed to more broadly and evenly spread the light they emit, unlike older LEDs that were more directional (for spotlights and accent lighting). Our favorite is the 4 watt Pharox bulb pictured above, but others are available, including 2 or 3 watt bulbs for off-grid, solar DC lights. Save money. Save energy.
Why are LEDs so much prettier? Let's do a rundown, shall we?
- LEDs emit a much more flattering, cleaner light than CFLs.
- LEDs use 1/10 the energy of standard CFLs. We're talking only 2 or 3 watts, babies!
- LEDs last about 60,000 hours. That's much, much longer than CFLs.
- LEDs don't contain toxic mercury (CFLs do).
- LEDs are extremely durable and hard to break, unlike CFL spirals that break times more easily than even conventional lightbulbs.
- Buy 2, 3 or 4 watt LED bulbs at Real Goods.
