While we were patrolling for selections in an upcoming gift guide, we had a delightful excursion through a wonderland of playhouses that left us utterly inspired. We've been so distraught at the outrageous cost of homes in California, we had a brilliant idea. Why not buy a tiny lot of land and build a perfectly pretty playhouse upon it, like the Victorian Mansion Playhouse by Playhouse Street (pictured above)? What a solution to the housing crisis!
Children's playhouses have come such a long way from the warped-planked, rusty-nailed forts of yesteryear that the tipping point has finally arrived to make them suitable as permanent addresses. Today, you can create your own patch of Oz with a gorgeous, custom-built refuge for the young at heart, even if you're thin of wallet. Just add plumbing and electric, and you're all set. Think about it: You could cut the cost of a real home by more than 75% by opting to live in a munchkin-sized house on a smurfy piece of real estate.
Some may think it's desperate or taking down-sizing to the extreme, but we know it's only a matter of time before it really happens, before hardworking adults take childhood regression quite literally and move into playhouses once reserved for spoiled moppets. The economic pressures almost demand it. We don't know about you, but we plan on pooling together a group of fab friends to buy a nice lot where we can create our own miniature Wisteria Lane. Don't worry. If you'd like to join us, we'll leave room on the lot for seasonal neighbors only.
Below is a selection of adorable children playhouses to inspire you. If you already own a house with a huge yard (which means you don't live in California) and actually can afford one for your own children, by all means go for it. At the rate things are going in America, they may have to permanently move in after college, anyway.

La Petite Maison Playhouse - $23,400.00
- Buy it at Jen Klair Kids

Grand Victorian Playhouse - $18,999.00
- Buy it at Lilliput Play Houses

Gina's Cottage - $9500.00 and up
- Buy it at Custom Playhouses, Inc.

Sophie's Magic Windmill Playhouse - $38,000.00
- Buy it at Posh Tots

Red Beard's Revenge Pirate Ship Playhouse - $52,000.00
